SKU: YS
SKU YS Category Brand:

Product Summary

A 316 stainless steel Y strainer (wye strainer) rated 800 WOG, PT threaded, sizes 1/4″ to 3″. The SUS 316 screen comes in 20, 60 or 100 mesh — all in stock, shipped with 20 mesh as standard — to catch pipeline debris before it reaches your pumps, meters and control valves. Body and bonnet in CF8M (cast form of 316 stainless steel); CF8 (cast 304) made to order. PTFE gasket and O-ring, -20 °C to +180 °C. A blow-off plug lets you flush trapped debris without removing the screen. NPT and PF threads made to order.

Product Description

The Y strainer – also spelled wye strainer – is the first line of defense for your pipeline equipment. This 316 stainless steel y type strainer mechanically removes solids from flowing liquids or gases through a wire mesh screen, protecting pumps, meters, control valves and steam traps from debris, scale and rust.

The “Y” shape keeps fluid resistance low while the screen traps particulates. A threaded cap gives access to the filter screen for cleaning without removing the strainer body from the line, and a blow-off plug lets you flush trapped debris without even opening the cap. PT threaded ends pair naturally with our threaded stainless steel ball valves.

Which Mesh Should You Choose?

Screen Filtration level Typical use
20 mesh (standard) Coarse General pipeline debris, scale and rust — the default screen we ship
60 mesh Medium Finer sediment ahead of meters and spray nozzles
100 mesh Fine Fine particles ahead of control valves, instrumentation and precision equipment

All three screens are in stock; other mesh counts can be made to order. For exact opening sizes, see our Y strainer mesh size to micron chart.

Advantages & Benefits

  • Equipment longevity: captures abrasive particles before they reach pumps, meters and valves downstream.
  • Versatile filtration: interchangeable 20/60/100 mesh screens adapt the filtration level to your process.
  • 316 corrosion resistance: outlasts brass or cast iron strainers, with added molybdenum resisting pitting from chloride-bearing media.
  • Clean without stopping the line twice: the threaded cap gives quick screen access, and the blow-off plug can flush trapped debris without opening the cap at all.

Application Fields & Locations

  • Pump protection: installed on the suction side of pumps to prevent impeller damage.
  • Steam systems: protecting steam traps and control valves from scale.
  • Water treatment: pre-filtration ahead of meters and instrumentation.
  • Oil & chemical lines: keeping debris out of spray nozzles and precision equipment.

FAQ

Which mesh should I choose — 20, 60 or 100? 20 mesh is the coarse, general-purpose screen and the default we ship. 60 mesh catches finer sediment ahead of meters and nozzles. 100 mesh is for fine particles ahead of control valves and instrumentation. All three are in stock; other mesh counts can be made to order.

Can I clean the screen without removing the strainer from the line? Yes. The threaded cap opens for quick screen removal, and for routine flushing you can simply open the blow-off plug — no need to open the cap at all.

Which thread standards are available? PT (tapered) threads are in stock. NPT and PF can be made to order — tell us which standard your piping uses when you request a quote.

What are the pressure and temperature ratings? 800 WOG maximum working pressure, and -20 °C to +180 °C, limited by the PTFE gasket and O-ring.

How should a Y strainer be installed? In a horizontal line, or in a vertical line with downward flow. On pump duty, install it on the suction side so debris never reaches the impeller.

What is the strainer body made of? ASTM A351 CF8M — the cast form of 316 stainless steel — with a SUS 316 screen. CF8 (cast 304) is available made to order.
