It mounts on top of the actuator and houses mechanical limit switches that trip as the valve reaches each end position, sending an electrical signal back to the control room.

If a valve fails to reach its position, the switch does not send its signal, and your system can raise an alarm before the fault causes a problem. That makes it a component you rely on for process safety, not just convenience.
