A gear operator turns a ball valve with muscle, through a worm gear and a handwheel. An electric actuator turns it with a motor. Fit a gear operator on large valves that rarely move. Fit an electric actuator when the valve cycles often, sits somewhere awkward, or must close itself when the power fails.
What Is a Gear Operator on a Ball Valve?
A gear operator — also called a gearbox operator or worm gear operator — is a manual reduction gearbox bolted onto the valve stem. You turn a handwheel; a worm gear multiplies your force and rotates the ball a quarter turn over several turns of the wheel. No electricity, no air. Just leverage.
It exists for one reason: torque. Past a certain bore, a lever handle stops being practical — the seats grip harder, the ball gets heavier, and one person can no longer break the valve open by hand. The gearbox trades speed for force, so anyone can operate a valve that would otherwise need a cheater bar.
What Types of Gear Operators Are There?
Three kinds turn up on quarter-turn valves, and they solve three different problems.
- Worm gear operator. The standard type. A worm shaft drives a gear segment on the valve stem; the gearing is self-locking, so the valve holds position without a brake. This is what “gear operator” means unless someone says otherwise.
- Declutchable gear operator. A gearbox that mounts between an actuator and the valve. A lever disengages the actuator so a person can crank the valve by hand — the classic manual override for powered valves. It is also the piece a battery-backup actuator makes redundant.
- Chain wheel operator. A wheel with a loop of chain hanging down, for valves mounted overhead. The operator stands on the floor and pulls the chain. It solves the reach problem the mechanical way; an actuator solves it with a cable.
What Does an Electric Actuator Do Differently?
An electric actuator puts a motor and reduction gears on the same mounting pad and does the turning for you. A signal from the control panel opens or closes the valve; a dry contact reports the position back. Nobody walks to the valve.

When Is a Gear Operator the Right Choice?
Honest answer first: sometimes it is, and no small electric actuator changes that.
- Large-bore, high-torque valves. Big butterfly, gate and ball valves need more torque than a compact electric unit delivers. The YZ-25 tops out at 20 N·m — that is small-bore territory, and we say so. On a 6-inch line, the gearbox stays.
- No power at the site. A remote block valve with no cable run nearby is a manual valve by definition.
- A valve you touch twice a year. If the valve only moves during annual maintenance, paying for automation buys you nothing.
When Does an Electric Actuator Make More Sense?
- The valve cycles often. Dosing lines, drain lines, batch sequences — anything under PLC control. Turning a handwheel forty times a day is a job; a 3-second motorised stroke is not.
- The valve is hard to reach. Top of a rack, inside a pit, behind equipment. With a gear operator, every operation means a person and often a ladder. With an actuator, it means a signal.
- You need position feedback. A gearbox cannot tell your panel whether the valve is open. A dry contact can.
- The site runs unattended. Nights, weekends, remote skids — a handwheel is useless when nobody is standing next to it.
What Happens When the Power Goes Out?
This is the question that keeps buyers on manual gear, so it deserves a direct answer.
The conventional fix is to order the electric actuator with a declutchable manual override — a handwheel-and-gearbox device bolted onto the actuator so a person can disengage the motor and crank the valve by hand during an outage. It works, but you are buying a gearbox after all: it adds cost and bulk to the package, and someone still has to walk to the valve, in the dark, and turn it.
The YZ-25 answers differently, with a battery instead of a wheel:
- It closes itself. On power loss, the built-in lithium battery drives the valve to the fully closed position — no air supply, no spring pack, no plant UPS.
- You can still operate it. Manual override buttons sit on the side of the actuator. Press open or close, and the battery does the turning — during the outage, without a handwheel, without disengaging anything.
- It keeps working. A full charge is good for approximately 5,000 operations, and an LCD on the housing shows the remaining battery level. This is not a one-shot emergency reserve.
So the honest comparison is not “electric actuator plus handwheel override versus gear operator.” With battery backup, it is “electric actuator, full stop” — the handwheel device drops out of the bill of materials entirely.

Four Questions That Decide It
Run your valve through these in order. The answer usually falls out by question three.
- How big is the valve? Above the small-bore range — for our actuator, above 1-1/4″ — stop here: gear operator. Torque decides before anything else does.
- How often does it move? A few times a year: manual is fine. Daily, or on a control sequence: every operation is a person-trip you are paying for, and the actuator starts earning its price.
- Can a person reach it in one minute? If the honest answer involves a ladder, a pit, or a locked room, remote operation is not a luxury — it is how the valve actually gets closed in time.
- What must happen when power fails? If the line can sit in its last position, any actuator will do. If an open valve during an outage means a flooded floor or a drained tank, you need one that closes itself — which is exactly what the battery backup is for.
Do You Still Need a Handwheel at All?
For the sizes this actuator covers — 3/8″, 1/2″, 3/4″, 1″ and 1-1/4″ quarter-turn ball valves — no. The two jobs a manual override exists for are both handled: the valve closes itself on power loss, and the side buttons let you drive it open or closed on battery power whenever you need to. That is the point of the design: the expensive part of “electric actuator plus manual backup” was always the manual backup.
Above those sizes, or where your site specification demands a mechanical override regardless, a gear operator is still the right tool — and we would rather tell you that than sell you the wrong actuator.
