This guide is the check we would want a buyer to run on any factory, including ours: four documents to ask for before you order, six items to read on the drawing, the questions that only apply to three-piece valves, and how to confirm that an ISO 9001 certificate is real.

What a 3 Piece Ball Valve Manufacturer Should Be Able to Show You

Ask for four things before you place the order: a dimension sheet with a material list, a material test report (MTR) for the castings, the pressure test practice in writing, and a copy of the ISO 9001 certificate. The drawing, the test practice and the certificate are standing documents that do not depend on your order. The material test report belongs to the castings in your order, so before the order the question is whether one will come with it and what it will say. A reply of “not available” is also an answer, and it is better to hear it now than after the first leak.

Our guide to specifying fewer leak paths maps each document to the leak path it covers. This article is about the next step: whether the supplier can produce them, and how to read them when they arrive.

Document

What to check

What a weak answer looks like

Dimension sheet with material list

Every part is named with a material grade, and metal parts show the standard the grade is written to (for example 316 bar to ASTM A276 for the stem); the bore is listed size by size; the bolting grade is named

A catalog photo marked “SS316, 1000 PSI” with no parts list

Material test report for the castings

Confirm that a report will come with your order and which parts it covers; the grade on it has to be the cast grade you ordered, CF8M for 316; ask whether it shows test values or only a declaration (our CF8M guide explains how to read one)

“We can get one” with no commitment, or a report that names a different grade

Pressure test practice, in writing

The test standard is named; the supplier says whether every valve is tested or a sample from each batch; the statement says what the test checks; an email is enough as long as it is in writing

“All valves are tested” with no standard and no scope

ISO 9001 certificate

Certificate number, issuing body, a scope that includes valve manufacturing, and an expiry date; the holder’s name and address are the factory’s

A logo in the website footer and no certificate

As a reference for the first document, the V-3A dimension sheet lists 17 parts, each with a material: body, caps and ball in CF8M (cast 316), stem in 316 bar to ASTM A276, seats, packing, end seals and thrust washer in PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), bolts to ASTM A193 grade B8, a stainless steel bolting grade, and a bore (Ød) for every size from 11 mm at 1/4″ to 100 mm at 4″. Each valve is leak tested before it ships, with API 598, the American Petroleum Institute’s standard for valve inspection and testing, as the test method, and is checked dimensionally before packing.

Six Things to Read on the Drawing

The drawing tells you more than the quote does, because it names every part. Read the material list part by part, then the dimension table. If a line below is missing from the sheet, ask for it in writing before you compare prices, because two quotes with different answers are quotes for different valves.

Body, end caps and ball. Look for the cast grade, written as a cast grade: CF8M is the cast form of 316, and CF8 is the cast form of 304 (see our CF8M material guide). Order with the same words, so the order and the material test report match. If the grade matters to your process, a handheld X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer can check the alloying elements of a body on arrival; ASTM E1476 is the standard guide for this kind of metals identification and grade verification.

Stem. Look for the bar grade, 316 bar to ASTM A276 on the V-3A sheet, and for the words blowout-proof, which mean the stem is retained by the body rather than by the packing nut. The drawing or the datasheet is where this is confirmed in writing.

Seats and packing. Look for the seat material and the temperature it sets. PTFE seats on our threaded three-piece valves set a range of −20 °C to +180 °C (−4 °F to +356 °F). On sanitary three-piece valves the seat construction changes the limit, which the next section covers.

End connections. On threaded ends, look for the thread standard: PT, the JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) name for the ISO 7-1 taper thread; NPT, the American National Pipe Taper; or PF, the JIS parallel thread. Never accept “threaded” on its own, because PT and NPT do not mix, as our guide to valve end connections explains. On weld ends, look for the pipe standard, the schedule (the wall thickness series) and the outside diameter the ends are made to.

Bolts and nuts. On the V-3A, the two body joints are held by four bolts, so the bolting grade belongs on the list. The sheet gives ASTM A193 grade B8.

The two body joints. Look for what seals them: PTFE end seals on the V-3A. The next section covers the spares question that comes with them.

The dimension table also lets you check a claim that quotes repeat without proof. “Full port” means the bore is close to the pipe bore. If the sheet lists Ød for each size, you can read the actual bore in millimetres instead of trusting the label: on the V-3A, 1″ has a 25 mm bore and 2″ has a 50 mm bore. If the sheet lists no bore at all, full port is a word, not a dimension.

Questions That Only Apply to a Three-Piece Valve

Three-piece valves come with options that change the body, not only the ends. Five questions decide which valve you receive: actuator mounting, weld-end pipe, seat construction, rating by size, and spares. Ask them before the order, because each answer can change what you receive.

Actuator mounting. Ask whether the manual and the automated versions share a body. ISO 5211 is the standard for the mounting flange between a valve and a part-turn actuator, and F03 to F10 are its flange sizes. The manual V-3A has a lockable lever and no ISO 5211 pad; the V-3AM has an ISO 5211 pad in F03 to F10 and ships with the pneumatic actuator mounted at the factory. If automation is likely during the life of the line, order the V-3AM from the start. Tell us when you order and we supply it.

Weld-end pipe. Extended butt weld ends keep the weld away from the PTFE seats, but each design is made for one pipe. The V-3A-L2 weld ends are JIS pipe, Schedule 5S only, a thin-wall series, and they will not mate cleanly with Schedule 40 or heavier pipe. Whoever you buy from, compare the pipe standard, schedule and outside diameter on the dimension sheet with the pipe in your line.

Seat construction on sanitary valves. その V-3N Tri-Clamp three-piece, which connects with hygienic clamp ferrules, is made with either half-encapsulated seats, rated −20 °C to +180 °C, or fully encapsulated seats that cover the cavity around the ball, rated −20 °C to +80 °C (−4 °F to +176 °F). Same model, two temperature limits. The quote has to say which one you are getting.

Rating by size. A series name is not a rating. Some three-piece series carry a lower pressure rating at the larger sizes, and the ISO 5211 pad size changes with valve size, so confirm the rating and the pad for the sizes on your order. The V-3A is rated 1000 WOG, a cold working pressure rating for water, oil and gas, from 1/4″ to 4″.

Spares. Ask whether seat and seal kits are sold for the exact model and size; for the V-3A they are.

How to Check an ISO 9001 Certificate

ISO writes the standard but does not issue certificates. A certification body audits the factory and issues the certificate, and an accreditation body oversees the certification body, which is why a certificate can be checked. Ask for a copy and read four fields: the holder’s name and address, the scope, the issuing body with its accreditation mark, and the expiry date. Then confirm it with the issuing body, or search the IAF CertSearch database, which the ISO quality management committee names in its questions and answers on ISO 9001 certification as the place to verify accredited certificates.

The database lists certificates that accredited bodies have uploaded, and searching it needs a free account. Once you have the copy, the scope is the field that tells you who you are dealing with. A factory’s scope reads like “design and manufacture of stainless steel ball valves”. A scope that reads “sales of valves” is accurate for a trading company, and it also means no auditor has looked at a casting or a test bench. Ours is issued by ARES International Certification with the scope “Design, Manufacturing and Sales of Stainless Steel Ball Valves and Actuators”, and the certificate is on the about page with the issuing body named, so the issuer can confirm it.

Manufacturer or Supplier: Reading the Paperwork

Both can be legitimate sources for the same valve, and many distributors have engineers on staff. The question is who holds the drawings and the test records, and who answers when a seat fails in year three. Look at whose name is on the drawing and the test report, and at what the seller can quote outside the catalog.

A manufacturer sends a dimension sheet in its own name for each end type, with one model system across them. The V-3A has separate sheets for threaded, socket weld and butt weld ends. A reseller forwards a brochure.

A manufacturer can quote outside the catalog: a different handle, a different thread, your logo on the body, or a valve built to your drawing. A reseller has to pass the question to the factory and wait.

A material test report shows who issued it. Ask how that report connects to the valves you receive, and who in the chain answers if the numbers are questioned.

The same product photo on several storefronts is a sign that the sellers share one source. Ask who it is.

For imports into the United States, country of origin marking is required under 19 CFR Part 134, so ask where the valves are made and how the origin is marked. Ours are made in Taiwan.

Our article on how we manufacture ball valves walks through the process from casting to the leak test, which is the part of the chain a buyer rarely sees.

Samples, Retained Samples and the First Order

Before a production order, ask for a sample, agree in writing what the production valves must match, and ask the factory to keep a retained sample. The retained sample is the step most buyers skip, and it is the one that settles a dispute a year later.

On our side, samples are offered free of charge or at a cost depending on the product and availability, with shipping paid by the customer. When you approve a sample, a matching retained sample stays at the factory as the reference for the production run. Regular items ship from stock and everything else is made to order. Minimum order quantity depends on the product, and trial orders are welcome.

Private label and build-to-drawing work are available, with a non-disclosure agreement if you need one. The valve RFQ guide lists what to put on the enquiry so the first quote is the right one.

よくある質問

Why not pick a 3 piece ball valve manufacturer from a “top 10” list?

Because the lists verify nothing. The ranking articles that appear for this search, as of October 2026, are either sorted by how many contacts a database holds for each company, or written by a seller who places itself at the end of the list. None of them checked a drawing, a certificate or a test record. Use a list to collect names, then run the same four requests on every name: the dimension sheet with material list, the material test report, the test practice in writing and the ISO 9001 certificate. The answers, not the ranking, tell you who to shortlist.

What is the difference between a 2 piece and a 3 piece ball valve?

A conventional two-piece ball valve has a body and one end cap, so it has one body joint, and it is normally replaced as a unit when the seats wear. A three-piece valve has a center section and two end caps held by bolts, so the center section can come out for new seats and seals while both ends stay in the line. That access costs more parts, more bolts and two body joints instead of one. For a buyer, it also adds lines to the material list and a spares question. Our guide to ball valve body types compares the constructions in detail.

Can I order a 3 piece ball valve in 304 stainless steel instead of 316?

Usually yes, but ask which grade the factory stocks, because the stock grade is the one that ships from stock and the other grade is made to order. On our three-piece range the stock grade is 316, cast as CF8M, and 304, cast as CF8, is made to order; that applies to the V-3A, the V-3AM and the V-3A-L2, and the sanitary V-3N can also be made in 304 on request. Choose 316 where chlorides are present, because its molybdenum resists pitting, as our CF8M guide explains. Whichever you choose, write the cast grade on the order.

How long does it take to get 3 piece ball valves from a manufacturer?

It depends on whether the item is in stock or made to order, so ask for the lead time per line on the quote rather than one figure for the whole order, and ask whether that time includes testing and the documents you requested. On our side, the schedule is confirmed with the quote once the quantity and specification are known.

What should I check when 3 piece ball valves arrive?

Check a few valves from the shipment against the approved sample and the drawing: body markings, bore, thread standard with a thread gauge, handle and lock plate, and the number and grade of body bolts. If the grade matters, run the XRF check from the drawing section. Confirm that the documents you ordered arrived, including the material test report if you asked for one. Record what you find, and raise any difference with the supplier before the valves are installed, because a valve in the line is much harder to return than a valve on the receiving bench.

Summary

Verifying a 3 piece ball valve manufacturer is four documents and a drawing. Ask for the dimension sheet with material list, the material test report for the castings, the test practice in writing and the ISO 9001 certificate before you order. Read the drawing for the six items that decide how the valve behaves. Ask the three-piece questions about actuator mounting, weld-end pipe, seat construction, rating by size and spares, and settle samples and a retained sample before production starts. A manufacturer that can answer all of that in writing has already told you most of what you need to know.

Send us the size, end connection, thread standard and service conditions for your three-piece valves, and we will propose a valve for each position and send its dimension sheet. We have shipped valves to the United States, and export orders travel by sea freight.

お見積り依頼 — 24時間以内に返信いたします →

A 3 piece ball valve manufacturer is easy to find and hard to check.
