It comes from the design of the whole line, the cleaning procedure that runs on it, and the verification that proves the procedure works. No valve delivers it alone, and a polished body with a Tri-Clamp end is not evidence of anything by itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That matters because &#8220;sanitary&#8221; covers a wide range of duty. A brewery isolating rinse water, a dairy running automated cleaning every day, and a biotech plant documenting a sterile process do not have the same requirements for cleanability, drainability, material traceability or paperwork. A valve that is perfectly adequate for one can be unacceptable for the next. This guide is about telling those situations apart, and about what to check and what documents to request before you order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Start With the Cleaning Requirement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before comparing valves, decide how the line will actually be cleaned. Three regimes cover most plants, and they place very different demands on a valve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>COP (clean-out-of-place).<\/strong> The valve is taken out of the line or dismantled, cleaned, inspected and reassembled. What matters here is easy dismantling, access, and the availability of spare seals. This is where clamp-ended valves are genuinely strong: a <a href=\"https:\/\/ballvalves.tw\/de\/produkt\/sanitar-handkugelhahn\/\">sanitary manual ball valve with Tri-Clamp ends<\/a> comes out of the line in minutes and every internal surface can be inspected directly. A large share of food and beverage duties are served well this way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CIP (clean-in-place).<\/strong> Cleaning solution is circulated through the assembled line. Whether a given valve is cleaned adequately is not a property of the valve alone. It depends on the valve&#8217;s internal geometry, its orientation and position in the line, the cleaning chemistry, the flow velocity, the temperature and the contact time \u2014 and it is proven by the plant&#8217;s own cleaning validation, such as swab or rinse testing, not by a word in a catalog. Ball valves in particular have a body cavity around the ball. Encapsulated seat designs reduce how much of that cavity the product can reach; they do not make the valve cavity-independent, and they do not remove the need to verify cleaning in your actual configuration. Treat CIP suitability as an engineering question to settle with the supplier per model and per installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SIP (steam- or sterilize-in-place).<\/strong> Sterilization adds sustained temperature and pressure that the seats, seals, and any actuator must all tolerate, along with condensate and drainability considerations across the whole system. Our sanitary product pages do not publish temperature ratings, so if SIP is part of your process, state the sterilization temperature, pressure and duration at the inquiry stage and ask for written confirmation for the specific model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of this means sanitary ball valves cannot serve in CIP systems. A hygienic specification is built from documents, not adjectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Wetted materials.<\/strong> Get every product-contact material identified in writing: body, ball, seats, stem seal, and the clamp gasket. If a part touches product and is not on the list, ask why.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Surface finish.<\/strong> If your operating procedure requires a finish, specify it as a number (an Ra value) and request the actual finish report for the model. &#8220;Polished&#8221; and &#8220;sanitary finish&#8221; are descriptions, not measurements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Seat design.<\/strong> Ask how the seat handles the body cavity. Encapsulated (cavity-filled) seats reduce the exposed cavity around the ball; ask the supplier what that means for your cleaning regime rather than treating the phrase as a guarantee.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Drainability and orientation.<\/strong> Whether a valve drains depends on the installation as much as the valve. Confirm the intended mounting orientation and what remains in the valve when the line empties.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Connection standard.<\/strong> Ferrule and tube standards differ by region and by plant. Confirm the clamp size and tube OD standard against your existing lines before ordering, not after. It needs the same material documentation as the valve, and a replacement schedule.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cleaning access.<\/strong> For COP service, confirm there is physical room to break the clamps and remove the valve without disturbing adjacent equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A note on Tri-Clamp itself: the clamp connection makes dismantling fast and repeatable, which is a real hygienic advantage in COP service. It does not, by itself, certify the valve&#8217;s internal design, its surface finish, or its cleanability in place. Judge those separately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Material and Seal Selection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Body and ball.<\/strong> Unser <a href=\"https:\/\/ballvalves.tw\/de\/produkt\/sanitar-handkugelhahn\/\">sanitary ball valves<\/a> are built in 316 stainless steel. The usual reason to insist on 316 over 304 in food service is chloride exposure: chlorides drive pitting corrosion, and the molybdenum in 316 improves resistance to it. Whether that protection is sufficient still depends on the chloride concentration, temperature and exposure time in your process and your cleaning cycle. If your specification calls for a different grade, a low-carbon variant, or specific cast equivalents, raise it at the inquiry stage and confirm against the model&#8217;s material certificate rather than assuming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cleaning chemicals count as process media.<\/strong> Caustic, acid and chlorinated sanitizers can be more aggressive toward the valve than the product itself, especially at elevated temperature. Compatibility has to be judged against the actual chemical, its concentration, its temperature, the contact time and the rinse practice, for the steel and for the polymers alike. A material that is fine in the product can still be degraded by the cleaning cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Seats and gaskets.<\/strong> Seats on our sanitary models are PTFE; sanitary butterfly valves use EPDM or silicone seals. None of these material names is proof of food-contact compliance by itself. Polymers are compounded, and compliance belongs to the specific compound, demonstrated by its Declaration of Compliance against the regulation that applies in your market \u2014 for example FDA 21 CFR 177 in the United States or Regulation (EC) 1935\/2004 in the EU. Request that document for the actual seat and gasket compounds in the valve you are buying, and keep it with the plant&#8217;s records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choosing Between Manual, Pneumatic and 3-Way Valves<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Manual valves<\/strong> suit low-frequency isolation at accessible positions: tank outlets, hose stations, changeover points that an operator visits anyway. In COP service their simplicity is an asset: fewer parts to dismantle, inspect and document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pneumatic valves<\/strong> earn their place where cycles are frequent, where the valve is hard to reach, or where the control system needs to sequence valves reliably. Be clear about what automation changes: a <a href=\"https:\/\/ballvalves.tw\/de\/produkt\/hygienisches-pneumatisches-kugelventil\/\">Hygienisches pneumatisches Kugelventil<\/a> has the same wetted path as its manual equivalent. The actuator improves repeatability and control; it does not improve hygiene. Choose the fail position (spring return to a defined state, or double acting) from process risk: decide what the valve must do when air or signal is lost, and specify it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3-way valves<\/strong> divert or combine flow with one body instead of two valves and a tee, using an L-port or T-port ball. In hygienic service they demand extra scrutiny, because one port is always out of the main flow path: depending on the port arrangement and position, that leg may see little or no circulation during cleaning. Use a <a href=\"https:\/\/ballvalves.tw\/de\/produkt\/3-wege-kugelhahn-fur-sanitaranlagen\/\">sanitary 3-way ball valve<\/a> where the flow path, the seat design and your cleaning verification all check out for every position the valve will occupy. Do not treat any 3-way ball valve as eliminating dead legs by design, or as a substitute for mixproof isolation. Mixproof duty is a specific double-seal technology with its own design rules; a single-ball 3-way valve is not that device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For shear-sensitive or low-pressure transfer duties, clamp-type <a href=\"https:\/\/ballvalves.tw\/de\/produkt\/pneumatische-absperrklappe\/\">sanitary butterfly valves<\/a> are also common in food plants; the same material and documentation questions apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Documentation to Request Before Ordering<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For hygienic duty, the paperwork is part of the product. Depending on how demanding your service is, request:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Model and size, as they appear on the datasheet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Body, ball, seat and gasket materials, itemized<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Actual surface finish report, if your specification requires a finish<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ferrule or tube standard for the end connections<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pressure and temperature limits for the assembled valve, including the actuator where fitted<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evidence supporting CIP or SIP use, if your process requires it \u2014 and the limits that evidence actually covers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Material certificate and traceability for the wetted metal parts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Declaration of Compliance for the actual seat and gasket compounds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any third-party certification genuinely held by that model \u2014 ask for the certificate, not the logo<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Standards you may see referenced in hygienic specifications include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3-a.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3-A-Hygienestandards<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ehedg.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EHEDG<\/a> guidelines and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asme.org\/codes-standards\/find-codes-standards\/bpe-bioprocessing-equipment-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ASME BPE<\/a>. If your process requires validated CIP with strict dead-leg limits, mixproof separation between incompatible products, aseptic or sterile processing, a pharmaceutical documentation package, or a specification that mandates a third-party mark, settle those requirements before selecting hardware. Other valve types, such as diaphragm valves and mixproof double-seat valves, exist precisely because ball valves have limits in those duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On certification, our position is plain: our factory operates under ISO 9001, and our products carry CE marking. Our standard sanitary models do not hold a 3-A symbol or an EHEDG certificate. If your specification requires one, a valve without that certificate cannot substitute for one that has it, however similar the two may look \u2014 and we would rather say so at the quotation stage than have it surface at your incoming inspection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">RFQ Checklist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Copy this into your inquiry and fill in what you know.
